Forest landscape tattoo on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A wide band of forest runs across the inner upper arm, showing tall pines, a bare deciduous tree, smaller conifers receding into mist and a shaded ground area below. The work is built from fine stippling and soft graded shading, giving the trees depth and atmosphere. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the scene fills the width of the arm as a continuous landscape.

The mist hadn't lifted off Carrow Hollow when I started marking the stand, and it sat in the lower ground like milk in a saucer. Ada Pringle had left me a tin of red paint and a list of forty trees, all tall Scots pines her grandfather planted the year the railway came through. I was meant to be finished by Friday. I was not meant to get fond of them.

The first three I marked without thinking. The fourth was a pine that leaned out over the stream, its crown split by some winter gale, and I stood beneath it with the brush in my hand until my wrist ached. Higher up, on the ridge, a lone oak stood bare as a coat hanger. It was too twisted for the mill, which was why Ada had told me to leave it alone. Nobody wants timber that splits like kindling.
On the third evening a woman came up the track with a spaniel and a flask. She said she had grown up under those pines and asked which ones I'd picked. I showed her the list. She ran her thumb over the name Ada had written at the bottom, then handed me the flask and told me to skip the leaning one.
I did. The mill took thirty-nine. When the lorries pulled out, the leaning pine stayed, and so did the oak, and the young conifers that kept walking up the slope into the grey. I still go up on Sundays. The red paint has long since weathered off the stumps, but I know which ones are which.
