Barn and tractor in black and grey

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo depicts a wooden barn with a pitched roof, a chimney and a large window-style panel on its gable, alongside a vintage tractor with large spoked wheels. Smooth grey shading gives the barn and machine volume, with darker outlines and cast shadows against a soft, clouded background. The photograph shows the design twice side by side, so the composition is mostly filled by the subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tractor had not turned over since March, and Ada Pryce stood in the yard with a jerrycan of diesel and a grudge she had been carrying since Tuesday. Behind her the barn leaned the way it always had, its gable panel gone pale where the paint had given up, and the weathercock on the ridge still pointed north-east as if it knew something the weather didn't.

Her husband Walter had bought the tractor off a man in Hexham for forty pounds and a promise to fix the tailboard. Every spring it coughed, then caught, and Walter would wave the smoke from his face and say the old girl was only clearing her throat. He kept the chimney swept, hung the barn door true and never once let the wheels go dry. She had thought about selling the lot in the autumn. The estate man came with a clipboard and a cheese sandwich he didn't finish.

This morning she tipped the can, primed the carburettor the way Walter had shown her, and climbed onto the iron seat with her knees against the wheel. The first turn gave nothing but a click. The second gave a cough and a grey plume that rolled out low under the clouds gathering over the stubble. She pulled the choke, leaned on the lever and counted to ten.

The engine caught. Ada let it idle, hands shaking on the wheel, and looked back at the house, where a thin thread of smoke was already rising from the chimney. She had banked the stove before dawn without thinking, the way Walter used to, and for a moment she let herself believe he had come down early to see the old girl start. Then she switched off, took off her cap and went in to put the kettle on.
