Barn, silo and hot rod truck on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large realistic tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a weathered barn and a grain silo under a cloudy sky. Below them a vintage hot rod truck with an exposed engine, headlamp and spoked wheel is rendered in fine shading. The tattoo is mostly black and grey, with a warm reddish wash in the clouds, and the composition fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The truck had sat in Dad's barn since the spring the river came over the lower field, nose to the back wall, under a tarpaulin that smelt of diesel and mice. Nobody in Hale Mill asked why he kept it. I pulled the sheet off the week I turned seventeen and found the engine still whole, its chrome stacks gone the colour of weak tea, the headlamp cracked but not gone.

Through August Mo Pendry and I worked on it after the milking, with a socket set borrowed from the grain co-op and the wireless tuned to the Cardiff match. We ran a new fuel line from a Fordson we'd broken for scrap, bled the brakes until our forearms ached, and hauled two spoked wheels up out of the ditch behind the silo. Mo said a rod had to sit low and sound loud or it wasn't a rod at all. I said it only had to get us to Ledbury and back before Dad noticed the petrol.
The race was the county road past the silo, two miles of straight with a hump at the grain store. Mo's cousin had a Vauxhall with a bored-out block and a paint job he kept mentioning. We lined up on the verge at dusk, the sky going pink over the barn roof the way it does when the dust is up. When the flag dropped I stood on the throttle and felt the whole truck lift and shudder, the wheels humming, chaff rising behind us so thick the Vauxhall's lamps vanished.
We took the hump first. I braked hard at the barn lane and slewed in, and there was Dad with a lantern, watching. He said nothing. He walked round the truck once, ran his thumb along the cracked lamp, then went inside and came back with a paint tin and a brush. 'Red,' he said, dipping it. 'Same as the sky.'
