Geometric mandala on the back of a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala of stacked geometric petal shapes covers the back of a hand and extends towards the wrist, with a solid circle and small spiral curls at its centre. The design is built from crisp outlines filled with solid black and fine stippled dot shading that fades in places, giving depth. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against a dark, softly blurred background.

The tiles in the back parlour of Mrs Veal's house on Gull Terrace were laid in rings, and on your third morning you noticed the one that refused to sit flat. You knelt on the cold lino with your tea going cold beside you and pressed your thumb to its edge until the grout gave a little. Mrs Veal, behind you with the feather duster, said her late husband had set the floor from a drawing he never showed anyone, and that the bad tile was the one he couldn't finish.

You spent the week with a pencil, a set square and a tide table borrowed from the post office. You traced eight stacked petals that stepped inward, each one a fraction out of true, the way a shell grows when the sea keeps changing its mind. Where the lines met, the grout had been pushed into little curls, and you counted them the way other people count the bells of a church. By Friday the damp on the wall behind the sideboard and the turn of the tide at the breakwater had started to agree with your arithmetic, which you did not trust at all.
On Saturday you lifted the loose tile at the centre. Underneath was no drawing but a plain black disc of slate, cut perfectly round, sitting in the floor like a coin someone had dropped and forgotten. Mrs Veal came in with the duster, looked at it for a long moment, and said the tide would be out by six. You pressed the tile back down, and the whole floor seemed to breathe in around its rings, and you went out along the sea wall with the pencil still behind your ear.
