Barn owl in realistic colour on skin
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A barn owl with a pale heart-shaped face, dark eyes and speckled feathers stands upright with its talons gripping a perch at the bottom of the design. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with feather detail rendered through layered tones. Blues, violets and warm ochres dominate the colour palette against a pale skin background.

Mags had counted the owls in the tithe barn every March since she was small, and every March there were fewer, so when the new sexton chained the great doors and said the place was to be sold for flats, she went looking for the last one herself.

It was roosting in the rafters above the threshing floor, pale as a dropped candle, its heart-shaped face turned down to her as if she were the one out of place. Blue dusk came through the slatted vents and laid colour across its speckled breast, violet in the hollows and a warm ochre where the lamp reached. She set her bag on a sack of old seed and waited. Owls, her grandmother had said, do not come down to you. You go up and be patient until they decide you were worth the climb.
The climb took most of an afternoon. On the third day the bird stepped onto the rail above her and considered the tin of mice she had brought, then considered her, with eyes so dark they seemed to drink the lamplight. She left the tin open and sat on the cold beam with her back to the wall. When it finally took a mouse from her palm, she felt its talons close on the edge of her glove, neither hard nor gentle, simply certain.
The doors were chained the following week, and nobody thought to look above the eaves. In June Mags stood at the edge of the new car park and watched a pale shape lift from the broken gable, circle once over the hedgerows, and drop towards the fields where the grain used to be. She did not follow it. Some things are only kept by being left alone.
