Blue owl on a berry branch

Dotwork · Colour · Flash

A stylised owl with large orange eyes and pale, dotted facial discs sits on a curved lilac branch with red berries. The blue and brown feathers are built from fine linework, scalloped edges and small stippled dots. The soft cream background and muted palette of blues, browns, purples and red give the piece a gentle, illustrated look.

Mind the stair rail, it's loose, and keep your voice down past the fourth floor, because Mrs Okonedo on the landing is still asleep at this hour and she does not forgive. Right. Sit. The owl came to Carrow House the winter the cranes went quiet and the blocks stood up grey as wet cardboard. Nobody saw it arrive. It was simply there one morning on the dead branch of the rowan that grew through the car park, eyes like two pennies from a fire, and feathers the blue of a gas ring when the air is cold.

Now, the children from the twelfth floor said it was a spirit. The lads by the bins said it was a pigeon that had been to university. Old Dessie, who had a flat that faced the wind, said the owl had been sent to count the lights that stayed on after midnight, and that every light it counted it would keep alive. So for a month the owl sat on that branch, bright as a dropped bottle, and watched the windows, and the windows, one by one, began to glow a little longer.

Here is the turn, and then you can go to bed. The council came with their survey clipboards to say the rowan was diseased and the block would come down by spring. Dessie went up to the roof in his slippers, and the owl was waiting for him, berries red as a cut lip on the branch below. He didn't say a word. He just stood with it until the wind dropped. Spring came, the men with the clipboards went away, and the rowan is still there, with an owl on it, counting.
