Old Ruddock the bat had hung upside down in the apple loft since the hay came in, and he had opinions about everything that rolled. When the squash cart tipped on the lane below Farrow's orchard, one pumpkin bounced into the long grass and lay there glowing like a lamp someone had forgotten to put out. Ruddock dropped from the rafters in one swoop, ears first, and claimed it before the owl could open its beak.

"Mine," he told the pumpkin. The pumpkin, being a pumpkin, said nothing, which Ruddock took as agreement.

He perched on its shoulder and folded his wings around it like a cloak, and he sang it the moon songs his mother had taught him. Leaves came loose from the stems that wound up its side, yellow and then red, and drifted down onto the grass. A thrush asked him to move. A badger asked him to move. Ruddock informed them both that a bat of his standing did not shift for a vegetable, and that the harvest moon had chosen this particular gourd to sit on, which was why it had gone so orange.

By morning the berries on the vine had gone dark and Tilly Farrow came down the lane with her basket and a knife. She found the bat asleep on the pumpkin, ears folded flat, and stood very still for a long minute. Then she set the knife on the wall, went back to the house, and returned with her grandmother's shawl, which she laid over both of them. Ruddock woke, grumbled, and announced that he had planned the whole thing.
