Realistic maple leaf on a hip
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A large maple leaf is tattooed on the side of the hip, drawn with a stem curving up and out across the skin. The leaf has fine vein detail and soft, blended shading that lightens to orange at the centre and darkens to near black along the edges and lobes, giving a three-dimensional look. Warm reds and oranges dominate, with black and grey used for depth against the pale skin.

Dear Nell, the Bramley trees at Hollin Farm have started to go, and I've stopped pretending I can keep the windfalls out of the orchard lane. Your father would have had the whole row raked by now, but he never could tell a leaf from a wasp at forty paces, so I let them lie. Yesterday I found a maple leaf caught in the wire of the far gate, red at the rim and gone to copper at the heart, as if someone had held a match to it from underneath. It was the wrong tree entirely. The maple by the cattle trough was planted by the Ashworths before the war and has never fruited a single apple, and I don't know who carried that leaf across the field to hang it on our gate.

I pressed it between two sheets of the Gazette, the way you showed me, and it came out so thin you could read the newsprint through it. The veins stood up like the ribs of a fan. I meant to send it to you with this letter, but the post office in Ledbury wants a form for anything that isn't a bill, so I've put it in the drawer with your birthday cards and the stamp that won't stick.
The dog has been sleeping under the trough since Tuesday. I think she's waiting for the maple to drop the rest of its leaves, and I think she knows something I don't. Come up at half-term if the trains behave. Bring the good secateurs. We can finally cut back the bramble that has been strangling the wall, and if the maple is still green by Saturday we'll have a look at the trough together.
All my love, Mum
