Pumpkin-headed figure with a bat on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon jack-o'-lantern figure with a ruffled collar and striped body sits at the centre, with a ghost holding a bowl of sweets below it. A small black bat is placed to the upper left, and a partial green leaf and gold chain-like shape appear at the top right edge. Bold black outlines, flat fills and soft shading give it a playful neo-traditional look in orange, green, black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By half past nine on Hallowe'en the bowl of humbugs had not moved an inch. Mabel, the ghost given the job of holding it, kept peering down Thistle Lane through a hole in her sheet. Nobody had come up the lane since the vicar's boy, and he had only stopped because Gourd waved at him with a leaf.

Gourd sat on the wall in his ruffled collar and striped jumper, which his sister had knitted three autumns ago and which itched at the neck no matter how often he wriggled. He was a pumpkin. He had made his peace with that, but he did not care for the way people looked at him as if he might go off like a firework. 'Nobody wants a sweet from a turnip,' he said. 'It's the bat,' said Mabel. 'Bats put people off.' Crumb the bat, who had been dozing on the rim of the bowl, opened one eye and looked deeply offended.

They argued until the church clock struck ten. Then Mabel slid the bowl along the wall and said that if he thought he could do better, he could try being frightening himself. Gourd leaned forward, fixed his carved grin on the empty lane, and a small girl in a cardboard crown came round the corner at a run. She stopped. She stared. Then she laughed so hard she had to sit down in the road.

'Again,' she shouted. Gourd tipped his stalk, enormously pleased, and Mabel quietly took one humbug for herself, though as a ghost she could not taste it anyway. It was the principle of the thing.
