Blue and purple owl with heart padlock on the back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style owl with large blue eyes and a blue and purple body sits on a bare branch, with a golden heart-shaped padlock on its chest and a gold key hanging below. The bold outlines and smooth gradient shading give the owl a soft, rounded look, while the twigs and a thin purple ribbon are drawn in darker, finer linework. The vivid blues and purples dominate against the skin, with gold accents on the lock and key, and the design sits across the upper back.

The owl had sat on the willow branch above Hollin Bridge since before my father was born, and everybody in Coldmere had an opinion about what it was keeping. Mrs Abbott at the post office said it guarded the heart of the town. Mr Pryce at the garage said it was a lock nobody had the key to any more, which was why the owl looked so cross about it.

The summer I was eleven, I found the key in the mud under the willows, gold and cold, with a length of purple ribbon knotted through its bow. I carried it up the bank in my fist all afternoon, sure the lock on the owl's breast was waiting for me. Nobody had ever told me it was a real lock. At dusk, when the owl began to blink itself awake, I took the key to the bridge and climbed the willow with my knees skinned and my heart going like a sparrow's.
The owl turned its great blue eyes on me as if I were late for an appointment. The padlock was warm from the day's sun. The key turned with a small, reluctant click, and the heart swung open to reveal a folded square of paper, yellow at the edges, with a child's pencil drawing on the front of a fish with a crown on its head. Inside, in careful capitals, someone had written: TELL THE OWL WE ARE STILL WAITING.
I did not know who we were. I still don't. I closed the lock, hung the key back on its ribbon, and climbed down before the bats came out. Mrs Abbott was right, after all. The owl had been keeping something, and so was I, for the rest of that summer, though I never told a soul what it was.
