Bat tattoo on the thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A black bat with spread wings, teal ears, yellow eyes and bared fangs sits on the outer thigh. Bold black outlines and flat fills give it a traditional look, with small teal and yellow accents against the black body. The photo is framed from above, with the crouched figure's knees and plaid sleeves around the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The travelling show of Mother Calloway had shrunk to four wagons and a canvas with holes in its roof by the autumn the bat came to them. Nobody remembered who had caught him. He hung upside down from the centre pole, black as a boot, with ears the green of a bottle held to the light and eyes like two yellow coins, and he showed his teeth at anyone who came near.

The old woman put him in the act anyway. Each night at the last bell she lit the lamps one by one until the ring went dark, and the bat dropped from the rigging and spread his wings wide over the sawdust. The farm children from the valley paid their pennies to see a creature that could swallow a lantern whole, though none of them ever saw him do it.

By the first hard frost the crowds had stopped coming, and the wagons were sold one by one to a man in Dunmere who wanted the timber. On the last night a single farm boy sat in the stands, asleep with his cap over his face. Mother Calloway sat on an upturned bucket and said that a bat always knows the way home, even when the home has gone. She lifted the flap of the tent. The bat looked at her for a long while, then at the dark beyond the canvas, and went out over the stubble without a sound.

The boy woke to lamps going out and an empty rigging. Some say the bat still flies the Dunmere road when the fog comes in, circling wagons that are no longer there. Others say he simply found a barn with a good roof. The boy grew up, bought a field of his own, and every evening he leaves the barn door open a crack, just in case.
