Small black motif on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple black motif sits on the outer forearm of a person lying on a floral bedsheet. The design is drawn in thin, dark linework with no shading, and the soft, slightly muted photograph is taken from above. The pale skin and the pink and green flowers on the sheet fill most of the frame.

The mainspring had been wound so tight for so long that Grandad swore it had learned the shape of his thumb. He kept it in a saucer on the bench at Pell and Son, Horology, Stoke, under a magnifier that had gone yellow at the edges. Every Friday he would lift it with tweezers, turn it to the window, and say the same thing: a spring remembers what you ask of it, and it will not forgive you for asking wrong.

I was fifteen the summer the shop lost its lease. Grandad sat on an upturned crate while I cleared the drawers, and I found a second spring rolled into a tin that once held Assam tea, wrapped in a page torn from a seed catalogue. Sweet peas, pressed flat. He took the tin from me and held it the way you'd hold a bird that had flown into the glass.
"That one never went in a movement," he said. "Your gran wanted a curl for the back of a bracelet. I told her a spring is for keeping time, not for being pretty. She went home and bought me a jar of mint humbugs to show she'd won."
He unwound it slowly on the palm of his hand, a single loop of blue steel, and let it close again like a fern turning in. We never did find a use for it. I still have the tin, and the curl sits on top, with the sweet peas beneath it going the colour of weak tea.
