Traditional style tattoo of a stag's head with antlers and red roses on the upper leg of a person lying on a bed in grey socks.

Stag and roses on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of a stag's head sits on the upper leg, with its antlers spreading down past the bottom of the frame. Two red roses with dark green leaves frame the top and sides of the design, and the grey shading on the deer contrasts with the red petals. The photograph is taken from above on a soft white bed, with the lighting giving the image a muted, slightly faded look.

Pass me that bread knife, lad, and quit fidgeting with the biscuit tin. Aye, I'll tell it while I work, for my hands know this part better than my head does. The Margaret Rae was three days out of Lerwick, grey water all round, when the stag came swimming out to us from the Foula shore. Nobody saw it come. We looked over the rail and there it was, head up, antlers spread like a burnt-out hedge, paddling after the wake as if it had an appointment.

The bosun wanted it shot and salted. Captain Gunn said no, a beast that crosses that much sea has business aboard, and he'd not be the man to spoil it. So the stag took the forecastle as its own. I fed it oatcakes from my palm and it never once took the skin off my knuckles, which is more than I can say for the mate.

Then the weather turned, and the stag went quiet and stood at the galley door, and I'll not pretend I wasn't frightened. My sister had sent me a tin of dried rose petals for the tea, and I'd tipped them onto the table to sort. The stag put its nose to them, breathed in long, and lowered its head like a man at church. When we fetched up at Greenock it walked down the gangway without a backward look, and there was a red petal caught on the tip of one tine. I kept it in my Bible. It's still there, if you'd care to look.
