Green octopus tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A person sits on a striped sofa with their legs crossed, wearing a pale blue sleeveless top, and their face is not shown. A large octopus with green body and red-pink suckered tentacles curls up the outer thigh, with dark outlines and shading that give the body some depth. Warm lighting and the grey and purple sofa fabric frame the tattoo against the skin.

The octopus had taken the third bait in a week, and Nell Garrow decided the fourth would be the last thing it ever stole from her father's pots. She knelt on the slipway at Scarrow Harbour while the tide drew back over the weed, hauling up a crab pot that came up far too light. The bait was gone, the mesh was torn, and a single green tentacle hung from the wire, its suckers the red of rowan berries. She cut it free with her knife and it curled around her wrist once before letting go.

Her father used to say the old harbour wives kept an octopus under the quay, a bad-tempered thing that wanted paying in mackerel and never thanked anyone. Nell had laughed at him for it, right up until the pool by the sea wall rose with a long sigh and something under the bladderwrack opened a gold eye. Its body was dark at the edges, outlined like wet slate, and it watched her the way the harbour master watched a late boat coming in.
She baited a pot with the last of the mackerel and tied it off with the sheepshank her father had taught her, then left it in the channel. Next morning it came up heavy. Inside were a brass button, a handful of sea glass worn soft as sugar, and a knot she did not recognise, tied in pale weed and stiff as wire. It was neater than any knot her father had ever made.
She copied it into the net strand that evening, working by the lamp until her fingers ached. When she carried the net down to the water, the pool was already full, and a green shape was rising slowly to meet it. By dusk the wall had dried in the wind, and on the stones lay a single red sucker the size of a coin, still warm as a hand. Nell put it in her pocket beside the button.
