Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn pencil sketch of the Batman bat symbol, with the word BATMAN set in bold block letters across the wings. The outlines are dark and the fills use diagonal hatching, with small crack lines running through the letters and wings. The drawing is in greyscale on a pale background and is centred within the frame.

The pencil was down to a stub by the time Ruth Calloway got the wings right, and the clock above the drawing office door said ten past two. Nobody else was left on the third floor of the Hull print works. Outside, the rain had found the loose gutter again and was dropping onto the loading bay in a rhythm she had stopped hearing hours ago.

The brief had come from a cinema owner named Lionel Dace, who wanted his new marquee to look like something that had crash-landed on Humber Street. He had sent a photograph of a dented carrier bag and a note that read make it look broken but expensive. Ruth had spent three evenings hatching the letters so they looked chipped from a fall, drawing thin cracks through the B and the first A the way frost runs across a windscreen.

At half past three she held the sheet up to the lamp and saw what she had not meant to do. The cracks ran in the same direction through every letter, as if the whole word had been struck once from above and held together only by habit. She tilted the paper, then set it down on the desk. Dace would pay for the marquee, she thought, and he would never know the damage had been her own idea.

She pinned a clean sheet to the board, traced the outline again and left the wings unmarked this time. When the first van pulled into the bay at six, the drawing was already rolled and waiting by the door, its dark edges sharp against the grey light.
