Forest-filled paw print design
Black and grey · Flash
A paw print made of four toe shapes and a larger pad, each filled with bare, branching trees and vertical trunks. The pad has a denser forest of dark trunks with small shadowy figures near its base. The image is monochrome, with fine hatched linework and soft white highlights against a solid black background.

The prints began at the mill sluice, pressed deep into the wet clay as though whatever made them had stood there a long while thinking. Five toes, the pads square and heavy, and not one of them pointing where a dog would point. Mrs Halloran from the lower cottage swore it was the hound that went missing in the spring. I told her the hound had been dead since March and I'd dug the grave myself, so she could stop looking at me.

I followed them north for three days with a bag of salt and my grandfather's tin compass, which always swung a little east of true. The track went up through the birches, then into the old pines where the trunks grow so close the light comes down in stripes. The prints never broke the skin of the ground. Wherever they crossed moss, the moss stayed unmarked, and I began to suspect the creature was leaving them for me to read rather than walking at all.
On the third evening the trees opened onto a clearing I didn't recognise, though I've walked every parish in this valley since I was a girl. At its edge stood a row of trunks as bare as bone, and between them, low down, I saw small eyes catching my lantern, a dozen pairs, patient as clerks. I set the salt down in a ring. Then I pressed my own palm into the last print, and it fit exactly.
I walked home by the road the next morning, and the sluice was running clean. Mrs Halloran asked whether I'd found anything. I told her I had found the hound. It had not been lost at all, only out walking, and it had asked me to tell nobody which way it went.
