Batman mask in ink splatter sketch
Black and grey · Flash
A masked head in the style of Batman, with pointed ears and a cowl, drawn in pencil-like hatching and crosshatching. Dark ink washes and splatters spread out from the left side, breaking into angular shards and streaks. The image is black and grey on a plain white background, with no body part shown.

The plate cracked on the Tuesday, right across the forehead of the old cowl block, and Dennis swore at it the way he swore at everything that had been good in 1962. He had cut that block himself as a lad at Hallam Print, a hooded head with ears like a pair of bread knives, and the Wednesday crowd had pulled it onto every poster for the Sheffield Arts Hall until the lines went soft as butter.

Mina came in from the typesetting floor with a tin of black ink and a rag over her shoulder. She didn't ask what was wrong. She rolled a thin wash across the sheet, then flicked a loaded brush against the edge of the table, and the spray jumped the way cheap ink always does, breaking into fine grey shards across the paper. "Leave it," she said. "Look at the left side."
Dennis looked. Where the crack ran, the ink had split into streaks that followed the grain of the wood, and the hatching fell into the splinters like a shadow falling through a broken window. The cowl no longer looked damaged. It looked like it was stepping out of something it had been hiding behind for years.
They pulled the poster that Friday, a hundred copies, and no two came out the same. Dennis pinned the spoiled sheet above the guillotine and never sold it. Mina says a man came in the following spring asking for the mask that broke, and when she told him it was only a mistake, he said that was the only reason anyone ever bought anything.
