Batman mask dissolving into bats
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large Batman cowl fills the right side of the image, with its ears and eye cutouts clearly defined. A flock of smaller bats streams off the left edge of the mask and across the skin towards the upper left. The shading is black and grey, with soft grey tones on the cowl and solid black silhouettes for the bats.

The fog came in off the Lizard on the third night of the gale, and Ada Trewin climbed the lighthouse stairs with the black hood folded over her arm. Her father had kept the light on Gull Stack for thirty years and never once lit it without the hood, though he would never say why. He only said the sea listened to a thing that looked like the night.

Forty bats hung from the gallery rail, pressed together like wet slates. They lifted when she came in, not in a panic but slowly, the way a congregation stands, and they wheeled round the lamp in a loose stream. Ada pulled the hood over her head. The cloth was stiff with age and smelled of tallow and salt, and the two pointed ears stood up as hard as cut card. Through the eyeholes she could see the great lens turning and the beam sweeping out over the water, and below it the black teeth of the rocks where the Annunciata had gone down in her grandfather's day.
Out on the swell a single lantern swung, steering for the reef as if the men aboard had mistaken the gap for the harbour mouth. She could not shout across a gale. So she did what her father had told her the hood was for and let the bats go. They poured from the gallery in a black river, past the lamp and out over the water, and wherever they flew the spray seemed to lie down flat.
When the dawn came grey over Gull Stack, the lantern boat was tied up in the harbour with her crew asleep in their wet clothes. Ada hung the hood on its nail beside the door. In the morning there were bats asleep in its folds, and she left them there, because the light was lit and the sea had heard.
