Batman on an upper arm in blue tones
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of the Batman character stands in the centre, shown in a three-quarter pose with cape and utility belt. Behind him is a brick-and-arched street scene in warm brown and pink tones. Bold black outlines and blue shading define the figure, and the composition fills the upper arm and shoulder.

Rain had been coming off the arches since six, and by eleven the gutters along Mallow Row were running like they had somewhere better to be. Dorothy Vane kept the print shop at number nine under a sign that had lost its second letter years back, and she was not the sort to leave a lamp burning for anyone. Tonight she did, because the man in the damp coat had paid a deposit on a proof and said he would come back before closing. Closing came and went. She sat with her feet on the stove rail and listened to the water.

The proof was a single plate her father had inked before the war, a figure standing under a brick arch with his cape pulled out behind him like a sail. Her father used a blue that never sat flat on the paper. He said it was the colour of the hour after the gas lamps come on and before anyone admits the night has started. Dorothy had always thought the plate looked a little sad. The figure stared at the street as if the street owed him money.
Just past midnight the bell over the door rang and the man came in shaking water from his cap. He asked whether the blue plate had survived the flood in 'sixty-eight. She fetched it from the flat drawer, where it had been lying under a bent corner of old invoices. He held it to the lamp for a long time and then laughed, quietly, as if he had been told a joke he already knew the ending to.
He did not take the plate. He asked if she would keep it in the window until spring, and paid for another week. After he left she propped it against the glass so the street light fell across the figure's shoulders. The arch behind him, cut out of wet brick, looked for the first time like a door somebody might walk through.
