LEGO Batman minifigure on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of a LEGO Batman minifigure in a flying pose, with a grey body, bat emblem on the chest, yellow belt and purple cowl and cape. The shading gives the plastic-like figure a glossy, dimensional look, and the wings spread across the upper part of the image. The photograph is taken close up against a plain skin tone with a blurred background.

The wedding was held in the hall above the mill at Sallow Dene, and nobody could agree afterwards who had brought the box of bricks. Old Mags Tiller said it had come up the river in a sack of coal. The bride's uncle swore it had been under the piano since the Coronation. What everybody agreed on was the little man who lived inside it: a grey fellow with a black mask, a bat on his chest, and a yellow belt with four studs.

He was not a hero at first, the old people say. He was a figure who had never been let out of his box, and the children of Sallow Dene had been told that a toy kept shut in the dark would sulk and sour the milk. So on the morning of the wedding, the groom's youngest cousin, Jessamy, tipped him onto the trestle, and he sat there for hours with his cape folded, watching the cake go up in tiers.
When the rain came through the roof he did what toys do in folk tales and took to the air. Someone had pinned a stack of cardboard wings above the doorway for the bunting, and he went up on a length of cotton, arms out, cape snapping behind him, over the heads of the aunts and the fiddle player. The arm came away at the shoulder. Jessamy caught it in her cupped hand and saw the join had gone grey with age.
They tied him back on with a plait of the bride's ribbon, and the old people say he still hangs above the mill stair every wet spring, one arm fixed a little high, guarding the door of any marriage with a yellow belt and stubborn patience. Nobody has ever found the little clip that held the arm. Jessamy says it is in the cake.
