Black cat and hand on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black cat's head and front paw rest on an outstretched hand, with the cat's teeth just touching the fingers. The linework is bold and the cat is solid black with pale highlights on the eyes and muzzle, while the hand is shaded in grey. The tattoo sits on the calf against a dark grey background, with partial colourful tattoos visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down sideways since seven, and by ten the cobbles outside the covered market were slick and shining. The fish man had given up pretending his crates were dry. I was counting out change for a woman buying two pears when the black cat came under the awning, shaking water from its ears as though it had paid for the shelter. Nobody owned it. Dev on the flower stall called it the Inspector, because it visited every pitch in the same order and never bought anything.

That morning it stopped at my stall and sat down in front of the apples. I held out my hand, palm up, the way you would to a dog you did not trust yet. It lifted one paw and laid it across my fingers, very gently, then leaned in until its teeth just touched my knuckle. It was not a bite. It was a question, the sort my nan used to ask by pinching the back of your hand to see if you were paying attention. I kept still and let it ask.

Then it turned and walked off between the stalls, tail up, stopping every few yards to look back at me with those pale, unbothered eyes. I shut the till and followed, which Dev later said was the first sensible thing I had done all week. It led me past the bins to a gap behind the fish ice, where a cardboard box sat with its flaps folded inside out. Under a scrap of tarpaulin, three kittens were curled against a bundle of dry newspaper.

The cat climbed in beside them and did not look at me again. I went back for a saucer and a carton of milk, and when I returned the rain was still drumming on the tin roof. The Inspector had its head on its paws, watching the wet street through the gap as if it were checking the pitches one more time before the market closed.
