BAZINGA starburst tattoo on shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink tattoo showing the word BAZINGA in bold, solid block lettering inside a jagged starburst outline. The thin linework of the burst contrasts with the heavier filled letters, and the design sits on the upper arm near the shoulder against a plain skin background. The image is taken at a slight angle with a pink top visible at the right edge.

Nobody in the Ferraro Brothers Circus had laughed at Dennis's act since the spring, so when the tent flap lifted on a wet Tuesday in Hull and only four people stood in the rows, he decided to try the one thing he had not yet tried. He had written the word on a card the night before, in red felt tip, and pinned it inside his hat.

The routine was simple. He would trip over the tent pole, sit down in the sawdust, look straight at the audience with his painted eyebrows up, and say the word he had spent eleven years half-finishing. Mags, who ran the ticket booth and had once been a trapeze artist, had told him it sounded like a sneeze with ideas. He had not asked her what she meant.
He tripped. The pole caught his ankle exactly where it always did. He sat down hard, the sawdust rose around him like a small grey cloud, and a boy in the second row, maybe nine, sat forward with his mouth open. Dennis lifted a finger and said it, loud, with the flat certainty of a man who has never once been wrong about anything.
BAZINGA.
The boy shrieked with laughter. His mother laughed. Somewhere behind the curtain Mags let out a whoop, and the old lion in the back cage roared as though it had been waiting all season for a cue. Dennis sat in the sawdust, grinning, and understood that he had never needed the joke at all, only the burst of it, the jagged bright moment where a room agrees to be startled together.
