Sun and snowflake on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo shows a stylised orange and yellow sun with flame-like rays on the left, joined to a blue crystalline snowflake with diamond-shaped points on the right. The sun has soft shading and the snowflake uses lighter and darker blue tones for depth. The tattoo sits on a bare upper thigh, with a red garment at the top edge and a dark chair in the background.

The ice came off the mountain in a sealed drum, packed in sawdust, and by the time Ruth Abernethy reached the Forty-Mile Diner the sun had already taken the top layer. She cursed under her breath, pulled the tarp back, and found the block still hard at its heart, glittering like a broken window. Across the lot, the cook was squinting up at the sky as if it had insulted him.

Dell had been the sun's keeper on this road for eleven summers. He drove a rusted pickup with a hand-painted disc on the door, and every noon he parked under the one tree between the petrol pumps and the highway, just to see who would argue with him. Ruth had argued with him since she was nine. They had never agreed on anything except that the desert needed both of them, and that neither would say so.
That afternoon the heat rolled off the asphalt in sheets. Dell walked over with a jug of water and leaned on her tailgate. "Your ice is ruining my shadows," he said. "Your sun is ruining my cargo," she said. He poured water over the drum's lid, and where it struck the metal it hissed into a thin white smoke that drifted across the road and cooled the diner's sign by a degree. They sat in it until the cook came out with two glasses, and neither of them mentioned that the glasses were frosted on the outside only because they had both leaned in.
At dusk Ruth drove on with a smaller block wrapped in a wet towel on the passenger seat. In the mirror Dell's pickup stood in the road, its lights on, waiting for the cool air to come down off the mountains so he could go home. She left the window open a crack, the way she always did, and let the last of the warmth in.
