BB-8 droid tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of the BB-8 droid sits on the outer thigh, showing its white and grey dome head with a blue and red trim, a thin antenna, and an orange-and-red spherical body. The linework is soft and the red and blue areas are shaded with a painterly, blended finish. A toy BB-8 held in the left hand sits beside the tattoo for comparison against a paved background.

Dear Kieran,

The lift in Carrick House has been out since Tuesday, so I have taken to counting the stairs to keep my knees honest. Nine floors, two hundred and eleven steps, which I know because Mr Adeyemi on the fifth landing keeps a chalk tally on the wall and nobody has had the heart to rub it off. He's gone to his daughter's in Leeds for a fortnight, so the tally is mine now, and I have been adding to it with a face of disapproval.
That's how I came to be on the ninth floor walkway on Thursday with the wind trying to take my headscarf, when a little round droid came bouncing off the railing below me. Orange ring round its middle, white shell, a dome on top like a bald head that has seen things. It had dropped from the Pilkingtons' balcony on eight and was rolling in the gutter by the bins. A boy in a grey hoodie came flying down after it, and I thought he would cry, but he just sat on the kerb and pressed its dome back on with a bit of sellotape.
His name is Tobi. He is nine and lives with his gran on fourteen. He asked whether I knew the red stripes were supposed to be on the body, not on the dome, and I said I had no idea and he should take it up with the manufacturer. He explained very seriously that the droid had been painted by a friend of his mum's and it wasn't quite right, and he wanted to make it right. So he took a red felt tip from his pocket and began.
I have thought about that all week. Some things are only ever almost right, and the people who love them keep going over the lines anyway. Come up at Easter. The lift should be fixed by then, or else you can count the stairs with me.
Love, Nan
