Crossed lightsabers on a leg

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two lightsabers crossed in an X, with a blue blade running from the upper left and a red blade from the upper right. Both hilts are drawn in black with simple grey detailing. The blades have a soft glowing edge and the linework is clean and bold against freckled skin, with a dark background behind the limb.

The water tank split somewhere past the second cattle grid, and by noon the Hollis Pass road had nothing to offer but heat and the tick of cooling metal. Dessa Vane crawled out from under the truck with grease to her elbows and a grin I didn't trust. "Cannibal's Flat is six hours on foot," she said. "Or we make a signal that someone past the ridge will see."

She had two old sabres salvaged from a closed fairground in Barrow, the hilts scarred black, the blades humming faintly when the cells held. Hers was the blue, cool and steady. Mine was the red, and it stuttered like a pulse. We stood in the road and crossed them in an X, and I thought it was madness until she thumbed the switches and the two colours lit the dust like a pair of dropped stars.

Nobody came over the ridge. What came instead was a lorry driver called Joss, who pulled up at dusk, looked at our flaring cross for a long moment and asked whether we were selling something. We told him we were waiting for the sun to make up its mind. He laughed, handed over a jerrycan from his cab, and said the blue one suited the sunset better than anything in his cargo.

By morning the blue had dimmed to a thread, and Dessa was already hunting the jerrycan for a funnel. I kept my red hilt in my jacket pocket, warm against my ribs, and found I didn't mind the long walk so much.
