R2-D2 banner tattoo, sketch and colour

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

The left panel shows a purple outline sketch of R2-D2 with a scrolled top flourish, a banner reading BEEP BOOP, and a flower below. The right panel shows the finished tattoo on skin below denim shorts, with bold outlines, teal, blue, yellow and pink colour, and stippled dotwork shading inside the oval behind the droid. The composition is centred and close, with the design fully in frame.

Dear Tom,

Thanks for the lift home from the reunion, and for not pretending you remembered Mr Hadley's name at the buffet. I found the exercise book in the loft on Sunday, the one with the physics notes going soft at the corners. On the back page is that R2-D2 you drew in purple biro, the dome cut in one stroke, BEEP BOOP scrolled across a ribbon like a fairground sign. You said it was for the Year 9 art project and then handed it to me to keep, because you knew I'd fail the thing anyway.

I took it to Ruth's shop on Tuesday. She laughed at the flower, said nobody draws a flower that cheerful any more, and then spent an afternoon on the dotwork, tiny dots thickening round the oval until the droid looked like it was sitting in a patch of dusk. We chose teal for the dome, yellow for the lights and a blue for the petals that you'd have called wrong. Afterwards she held up a mirror so I could check the ribbon spelled what it should.

I haven't told Mum. She'd only ask why a grown woman carries a robot about with her, and I'd have no proper answer except that your sketch was the only thing from that school I ever kept. Come round when you're back up north. I'll show you the colour in proper daylight, and you can tell me whether the blue is wrong. Mind, you still owe me a biro.

Love, Jo
