Black ink tattoo on the inside of a wrist showing a stylised figure symbol above the lettered words be the change.

Be the change lettering with figure on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inside of a wrist. A simple stylised figure sits above the handwritten words "be the change", drawn with bold, slightly uneven linework. The skin is pale and the background is dark and out of focus, so the design stands out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pring kept the hall keys on a length of baler twine, and she swung them at me across the chairs every Saturday as if I might be late, though I never was. I ran the gramophone for the Calder Mill Institute dances, which meant I stood beside the urn and changed the records between the Lancers and the Gay Gordons, and I did not think about anything else for three hours a week.

Then came the wet Saturday in March when only eleven people turned up, and the Lancers were all wrong without enough couples to make the squares. Dennis Hollis stood by the stage with his hands in his coat pockets, the same as he had every week since his mother died, and I watched Rose Tilling notice him and look away. I put on a waltz I had found in the cupboard under the stage, a scratched thing with no name on the sleeve.

Dennis asked Rose anyway. They danced like two people who had been told the steps through a wall, elbows out, arms flung wide and then pulled in again, knees loose, a figure drawn in a hurry. Nobody laughed. Then old Mr Cotterill took up his wife, and the Brannigan sisters followed, until the whole floor was lurching about in its own uneven rhythm.

Ada came to the gramophone when the record ran out. She did not say anything for a long moment. Then she lifted the needle herself and said, 'Put that one on again, love. I've been waiting twenty years for someone to change the record.' She jangled her keys once and went to switch off the lights, leaving the floor scuffed with the marks of thirty pairs of shoes.
