The ghungroo are still warm from the radiator when you lift them off the hook, and the room above the launderette smells of hot cotton and the masala chai Mrs Sarin forgot on the sill. Outside, a night bus sighs at the stop on Lower Mosley Street. It is past midnight. You should be asleep, but the chalkboard keeps pulling at you, those small dots on either side of the word kathak, like the pauses between breaths.

Mrs Sarin taught you that the dots are not decoration. Before the first sequence of bols, you hold a silence for the length of two heartbeats, then strike the floor with your heel. "The audience hears the rest before they hear the sound," she said, tapping the board with her pen. You laughed at her then. You were nineteen and certain that everything worth knowing was loud.

Tonight the studio is empty because the building has been sold to a company that makes phone cases, and the lease runs out at noon. You fasten the bells to the cotton strap, count the tihai under your breath, three times, and then you stop. Let the room hold its breath. Below you, a dryer thumps through its cycle, and you discover you can keep time with it.

When the dryer falls silent, you pick up the cold cup, drain it, and set it down exactly where it was. The bells stay on the strap. You pull the door shut without a sound, and the quiet it leaves behind is the last sam you will ever hold in that room.
