Small Om symbol tattoo on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small Om symbol is tattooed in black ink on pale skin, shown in close-up. The linework is smooth and fairly thin, with some soft shading where the strokes curve. The plain background and tight framing keep the focus on the design.

The bell rope had frayed again by the time the rain reached the lych gate, so I was up in the tower with a length of tarred twine when Mrs Oduya came hurrying through the churchyard with her hat in one hand and a paper parcel under her arm. She wanted the ringers to hold off until the vicar had finished blessing the cake, which he would not do until the cake had been properly cut, which would not happen until her son stopped arguing with the caterer about the trestle tables. I told her the bells would wait. Bells always wait for a good excuse.

The parcel held a small brass bowl that had belonged to her grandmother, and inside it, wrapped in a handkerchief gone soft with washing, a stamp no bigger than a thumbnail. Her grandmother had carved the little curled sign into it herself, the one that looks like a figure eight with a hat on, and she had carried it from a village by a river I will never see. Mrs Oduya wanted it pressed onto the inside of her son's wrist before the ceremony, in ink, because the groom had said he would not wear a ring that could be lost in a dish of soup.
I knew how to lay the ink. I had learned from my uncle, who had learned from a man in Leeds who had no business being in a churchyard at all. So I took her grandmother's bowl up the tower stairs with me, and while the rain drummed on the lead, I pressed the little sign out in one clean stroke, a single breath held through the nose, and the groom laughed when he saw it stood on his skin like a seal on wax. The bells rang at half past two. Nobody asked me what the sign meant. Some things are better left to the hands that make them.
