Black fine line tattoo of a beach scene with a sun, clouds, a palm tree and rolling waves on the inner forearm.

Beach scene with palm tree on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a seaside scene with a rayed sun and soft cloud shapes at the top, a tall palm tree on the right and a small shrub on the sand. Rolling waves with hatched lines fill the lower half, and the whole design sits within a loose circular outline. The work is done in thin black linework with light hatching and no shading or colour, and it sits on a forearm against a blurred green plant background.

The sun is already sliding behind the cloud bank when the photographer finds you, and the caterers are still arguing over the lanterns. Your sister wants one more picture under the palm, the tall one that leans out over the sand as if it has been waiting all afternoon for a wedding. You tell her the tree was here first. She tells you to stand still, which is what everyone has been telling you since breakfast.

The vows were said at the tide line, with the waves coming in in long, patient rows. Marek's old schoolfriend counted them out loud as though they were guests who had arrived late. When the best man reached for the rings he found a folded napkin, then a bottle opener, and then the whole table dissolved into laughter while the celebrant stood there holding her umbrella against a breeze that had come from nowhere.

Later, when the band has packed away their amps and the lanterns are bobbing down the beach, you walk to the scrubby shrub at the top of the dunes. The ring is there, wrapped in a paper napkin, exactly where Marek's nephew swore he had not put it. Someone has drawn a small sun on the napkin in biro, its rays thin and uneven.

You sit on the warm sand and watch the last strip of cloud go pink, then grey, then gone. Behind you the palm creaks in the wind. By morning the tide will have rearranged every ridge, and nobody will remember which wave was counted first, but the ring will be in your pocket, and you think that is ending enough for one day.
