Hands holding a flower sprig on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of two hands cupping a slender stem topped with a small cluster of blossoms and leaves. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the design stays open and light on the skin. The photograph is black and white, with the arm running diagonally across the frame and a grey t-shirt sleeve at the top left and a bush of white flowers behind.

The sprig had survived eleven years in the cold drawer of the seed vault on Halden Ring, and Mira Okonedo had been told not to touch it until the cultivation bay was sealed. She touched it anyway. The stem was thinner than a hair and the cluster of pale blossoms at its tip had gone the colour of old paper, but when she cupped it between her palms the leaves gave a faint, grudging give, like something remembering it had once been alive.

Her father had kept a pressed copy of the same plant in a book of hymns, on the windowsill of a flat that no longer existed on the planet below. He called it the last of the hedge-flowers, though nobody aboard had ever seen a hedge. Mira had asked him once why anyone would keep a flower that could not be eaten, and he had only laughed and said you held a thing that would outlast you so that something else could hold you back.
The bay lights came up amber at four in the morning, ship time. She fed the sprig into the misting rack with two fingers and a steady hand, then watched the water bead on the first new leaf. Nothing bloomed. Nothing was supposed to, not yet. The rack hummed and the ring turned slowly against the black.
She stayed until the shift bell rang, long after her hands had stopped trembling, certain she had seen the smallest green tip uncurl at the end of the stem, and wondering who would be standing here, with their own hands cupped around a sprig, when it finally opened.
