Beaded anklet and feather tattoo on a foot

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle, shown from the front, with a tattoo that imitates a beaded anklet. A thin chain of small beads with a heart charm runs from the ankle onto the instep, where it ends in a shaded feather or swirling wing motif. The work is in black and grey, with soft tonal shading on the feather and crisp fine lines on the chain, set against a dark quilted background.

The tow rope parted again on the approach to Hollin Lock, so Dad sat on the cabin step with waxed twine in his teeth and swore quietly at the water. I was nine, holding the tiller while the boat drifted toward the reeds, and I watched his hands work the splice the way other children watched the telly.

Mum had kept a jar of old jet beads in the cupboard under the stove, and that winter she strung them into a chain thin enough to slip into a coat pocket. She put a little tin heart at one end, pressed flat from a biscuit lid, and told me the heart was for luck and the beads were for counting the locks between us and home. We had counted nearly four hundred by then, and she had stopped counting out loud.

A heron came down on the bank while Dad worked, grey as the canal, and let fall a feather that turned slowly on the air before it settled on the gunwale by my hand. I picked it up, still warm from the sun, and laid it across the coil of beads on the step. Dad looked at the two of them together for a long while and said nothing at all.

When the splice held, he hauled the rope taut and the boat swung clear of the reeds. I dropped the feather over the stern as we passed the lock gates. It went ahead of us on the brown water, turning and turning, and we followed it all the way to the bend, which is as far as I ever steered that spring.
