Small dotted bow on a wrist

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small bow is tattooed on the inner wrist, built entirely from black dots rather than solid lines. The hand is curled loosely in the background, and the soft, shallow focus keeps the tattoo as the sharpest point. The plain skin tone and warm beige fabric keep the attention on the small black mark.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pounce wheel had lost its teeth in the spring, so Ada Pryce pressed the pattern through with a darning needle instead, one prick at a time, while wasps worked the windfalls under the Bramley trees outside the open barn door. Her mother had cut every dress in the village from paper like this: sleeves, collars, the little bows at the back of a christening gown. Ada had never liked the cutting. She liked the pricking, the tiny holes lined up like a sum she could finally check.

The bow was the last piece. Mrs Cheeseman wanted it for the fête on Saturday, a ribbon bow at the hem of a pale blue frock for her granddaughter Lois, who was turning seven and had not stopped talking about it since June. Ada dusted the paper with chalk, pressed it onto the cloth and rubbed. Nothing came through. The damp had softened the dots, and the blue of the cloth swallowed them.

She sat on an upturned crate with the cloth across her knees and the afternoon sun coming sideways through the apples. Then she took the needle and went over each hole again, slowly, sewing a single black thread through every one so the bow stood out like a row of stars. It took until the shadows lay long across the grass. When she held it up, the bow looked less like a ribbon than a thing that might come undone if you breathed on it.

Lois came on Saturday in a dress with nothing wrong with it, and Ada found herself watching the child's back as she turned, looking for the one thing she had made. It was there, low on the hem, a small dotted bow, marked the way you would mark a path through a wood. Nobody else would notice. Ada noticed, and went to fetch the lemonade.
