Three stars and a vine on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a white cloth, showing a tattoo of three stars linked by a swirling vine running across the top of the foot towards the toes. The stars are outlined in black with grey shading, and the vine is drawn in solid black linework with curls. The image is in colour, with pale skin and dark red toenail polish against a plain light background.

The honeysuckle had got under the greenhouse gutter again, so Mam sent me out with the secateurs before the frost, and I was still at it when the sky went dark enough to show the first star above the shed roof. I counted three before the cold got into my knuckles and I had to stop.

Grandad Ted planted that vine the summer I was born, along the bottom of the back wall where the sun lasts longest. He used to say a vine will follow anything that holds still long enough, and he said it while holding still himself, leaning on the fork with his cap pushed back, watching the tendrils feel their way along the brick as if they were reading it.
Tonight the tendrils had found the handle of his old rake, which has leaned against the wall since the funeral. They had wound it round twice and then curled off into a loop of their own at the end. I held the secateurs open for a long time. In the end I cut only the dead stems at the base and left the curls where they were, so the vine could keep wandering towards the lawn.
When I came in, Mam asked whether I'd got it all. I said I had, more or less, and went back out to look again. The three stars were still there over the shed, and the vine ran down the wall in its slow looping hand, pointing at the back step as if it had something to tell me.
