Matching scroll vine tattoos on two feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a red fabric surface, each with a black ornamental tattoo of curling vines, swirls and small dots across the top of the foot. The linework is fine and mostly uniform, with solid black filled areas in some of the scroll ends and leaves. The tattoos are mirrored in shape but differ in detail, and the composition is framed closely on the toes and upper feet.

Mind the wasps, they're drunk on the windfalls, so sit where I can see your faces. No, Tom, the big basket is for the Bramleys, not for you to climb into.

Now. Late August, the year the old Hallow orchard was sold, there were two sisters who worked the ladders for a penny a tree. Ada and Mab Quill looked alike to everyone except their father, who could tell them apart by the way they held a pruning knife. They had a vine that climbed the north wall of the cider house, a bitter old thing nobody had pruned since the war. Its tendrils curled back on themselves like the ends of a wig, and every spring it sent up a new scroll, tighter than the last.
Father used to say a vine doesn't grow, it argues. So Ada cut the left curl and Mab cut the right, and they sat on the wall until the sun went down, measuring each other's green and counting the dark little berries that never ripened. Mab swore the vine was trying to grow a second trunk out of its own shadow. Ada swore it was only looking for the light.
In the end they did what sisters do. They took cuttings from the same mother stem, grafted one onto the apple stock by the gate and the other onto the pear, and waited three summers. The pear took, the apple didn't, and neither of them ever said which one she had wanted. That, children, is the sort of story I can't finish. Pass me the knife and hold the basket still.
