Solid black blackwork tattoo of a stag's head and antlers within swirling smoke shapes, shown on a forearm.

Stag silhouette blackwork on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The design shows a stag's head and antlers formed by white negative space within a large solid black silhouette, with spiral, cloud-like shapes and ragged dark edges around it. The fills are dense and solid, with bold, clean edges and no shading or grey tones. The motif wraps vertically along the limb, with the black mass framing the stag and the white spirals balancing the composition.

Ada had been feeding the clamp for three days when the smoke started to lean. It came off the turf-covered mound at the clearing's edge in a thick black column, the way it always did, then bent eastward toward the village as if something had called it. She wiped her hands on her apron and watched it climb over the alders, and then she saw the head in it.

Her father had taught her to read the smoke: blue for dry wood, white for wet, black and rolling when the burn was going wrong. This was black, but it did not roll. It held its shape, a broad mass with ragged edges like scorched paper, and inside it the air had been pushed aside to make a pair of branching antlers and a long pale face. Across the clearing the old stag that had sheltered in the hollow all winter stood with its head lifted, watching the same thing she was.

Pim Thackery came up the track at noon, sleeves rolled, wanting to know why the smoke had turned toward the church and whether the carts could come through. Ada pointed with her chin. He squinted, crossed himself, and said nothing about the beast. She told him the kiln would cool by dusk and the sacks could wait. He grumbled about the price of charcoal in the market, but he went.

That evening the spirals thinned and drifted down into the hollow, settling over the pale bracken where the stag had been lying. By morning the black column was gone. Ada raked the ash flat, left the last log unlit, and walked home the long way, past the stone where the antlers still showed faintly in the frost.
