Tribal lion on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large, solid black tribal-style lion stands on its hind legs, with a flowing mane and a curled tail, across the back of a calf. Smaller crescent shapes sit above and below the lion, with the upper two appearing blue and the lower one black. The lion's bold, filled silhouette contrasts with the pale skin, and the photograph is taken outdoors against a bright background.

Dear Tamsin, the Lord Warden has finally let the wagons through the north gate, though he insisted on the old banner, the one with the rearing lion, before he would sign anything. Your brother held the pole all morning and complained that the mane snagged on every gust.

You will remember the crescents. Master Oudry says they are older than the lion, that the first kings of Harrowmere wore a moon on each shoulder so the people could tell them apart from the night. The blue ones were painted by the dyers' guild last spring, when the river ran red and nobody would drink from it. I copied the black crescent onto the lintel of the granary myself, and the rain has not yet taken it.
Yesterday the scribes found the old ledger in the cellar, the one nobody has opened since the flood. Its last entry is a column of names, and beside each one a small drawn moon. Under the final name, in a hand I know from my own lessons, someone had written only: still standing.
I have pinned that page above my desk. When the lamp is lit, the lion's shadow climbs the wall and looks, I think, a little like it is about to leap. Come home before the frost. The wagons are nearly empty and the moons want counting.
Your loving cousin, Ilse
