Bear and stag tattoos on two thighs

Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on the thighs. The left shows a bear's head framed by a peony, leaves and a small landscape in a shield shape, while the right shows a stag's head with antlers, a mountain scene and foliage above an ornamental base. The linework is bold and the shading is in black and grey, with the scenes set against a dark brick-effect background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bear has been in the apple loft again, and you are too tired to chase it. You sit on the cold step with the lantern and count the split sacks while Brother Anselm mutters that the beast is a sinner. You tell him it is hungry, which in the dead of winter amounts to the same thing.

Then the stag comes down through the snow at the bell hour, antlers crowned with frost, and stands in the yard as though it has been sent for. Its eyes are not wild. Anselm drops his rosary in the slush. You remember the old prior's rule that no one kills what the mountain sends, so you fetch the heel of the morning loaf instead and set it on the well-stone.

Over three nights the animals keep coming, the bear for apples, the stag for the salt lick by the well. You stop barring the gate. Anselm pretends not to notice, then begins leaving a shallow bowl of milk on the wall, and scolds you when you drink from it yourself. On the fourth morning the bowl is licked clean, the loft door hangs open, and the prior writes nothing in the register at all.

In spring you climb the path to the high meadow with a jar of honey wrapped in sacking. Beside the stag's hoofprints you find the bear's, pressed deep into the mud like a seal, both heading up toward a valley where the peonies are already out. You leave the honey on a flat stone and turn back before the light goes, with the gate still open behind you.
