Matching wolf heads on two forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are crossed against a dark background, each carrying a wolf head tattoo built from stippled dots. The larger wolf on the right has shaded fur, defined eyes and a dark nose, while the smaller wolf on the left is lighter and more open. Small dotted triangles sit beside each head, and the ink is entirely black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ysolde Marr had been counting the stipple points on the ridge for three days, because the survey drones only logged what they could see and the wolves never showed up on them. The dotted packs moved by night across the Halden Flats, leaving small triangles of dust where their paws pressed the crust, and the old field manuals called those marks waymarks. Nobody at Outpost Seven had seen one clearly in forty years.

The two wolves came down to the water tank at dusk, one broad-headed and grey, the other smaller and paler, its ears laid back as if it listened for something behind it. Ysolde did not reach for the rifle. She set down the sample case and waited, the way her grandmother had taught her to wait for weather. The bigger one stared at her long enough that the dots along its muzzle seemed to gather into a shadow.

Her brother Tobiah had gone out to the ridge in the spring and not come back, but the drones had recorded him walking beside a pair of animals, shoulder to shoulder, like men who had agreed on a road. She had watched that footage until the pixels broke apart. Now the smaller wolf turned, glanced at the tank, and trotted towards the ridge without looking back.

The bigger one stayed. It lowered its head to the water, drank, and left a triangle of wet dust on the concrete lip, precise as a stamp. Ysolde pressed her palm to it. It was still cool. She wrote the coordinates in the logbook and, beneath them in pencil, the only word she could think of: waymark.
