Bear and deer thigh tattoos
Neo-trad · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit on the front of the thighs: a bear's head with a peony flower above it and a small dot on its forehead, and a stag's head with branching antlers, a domed landscape and leaves. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and grey, with fine detail in the mountain scene and the ornamental pendant shapes below each animal. The photo is taken against a dark brick and graffiti wall, with the legs filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ruth had the ovens lit by half four, the flour still cold on the board, and she did not look up when the back door latch lifted. Her uncle had always said the mountain sent its visitors down before the light, and she had stopped arguing with him the winter he died.

A bear came into the yard, broad as a wardrobe, its coat gone silver at the muzzle. It sat on the flagstones beside the bin of yesterday's loaves and waited with the patience of someone owed money. Ruth tore the heel off the first batch, the one with the blackened crust she kept for herself, and set it down on the stone. The bear ate it slowly, looking past her at the ridge where the first grey was starting to show.
Something moved above the ridge, antlers against the paling sky, a stag stepping onto the snowline as if the peak had grown itself a crown. Ruth had seen it a few mornings this month. Her uncle had called it the mountain's bookkeeper, come to check what had been taken and what had been given back. She wiped her hands on her apron and counted the cooling racks: forty-two loaves, the same as yesterday.
The bear rose, shook the frost from its ruff, and walked back up the lane without hurry. Ruth slid the rye into the oven and found she was smiling. She wrote forty-two in the ledger, then crossed it out and wrote forty-three beside it, the way her uncle always had, and went to fetch more flour.
