Black and grey realism tattoo on an upper arm of a snarling bear's head above a woman's face with dark painted stripes.

Bear headdress portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large portrait tattoo shows a snarling bear's head with bared teeth, worn like a headdress over a woman's face. The face has dark horizontal markings across the cheeks and eyes. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine fur texture on the bear and soft gradients on the skin tones.

Mam says you'll not come home for Christmas, so I'm writing to tell you about the bear instead. It came down off the fell the week the snow shut the lower road, and it walked straight through the allotments as if it had an appointment at the co-op. Dad saw it from the bridge. He said it stopped at the bins and looked back at him like he was the one being inspected.

You remember Gran's hood, the one in the blanket chest that smells of cedar and bonfire smoke. She told me once it was not a costume but a debt, paid by whoever wore it next. I thought she was muddling her stories with the wireless. Then I watched that bear turn its great head toward the lamp in the wood shed, and I understood she had meant something plainer: wear the animal's shape where people can see it, and the animal has less reason to come looking for you.

I took the hood out on Tuesday. The fur was thinner than I remembered and the stitching round the jaw had gone brittle, but the strip of painted hide over the eyes was still dark and clean, the same two bars Gran used to put on before the lambing. I stood in the yard with it on for a minute, feeling the weight settle across my shoulders, and then I walked out to the bins with a torch.

The bear was gone by morning. Its prints went up the fell, neat and unhurried, and nothing else in the village had been touched. I've hung the hood on the hook by the back door, where you used to leave your coat. Come home when the thaw starts. Bring the good kettle, and tell me whether you still think Gran was muddling things.
