Bearded figure and blossoms on the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo covers the back of a hand, showing a curly-haired, bearded head in profile with a crescent moon above it. Pale blossoms with dark leaves wrap around the figure and continue toward the wrist, with a few loose petals scattered nearby. The head is built from fine, dense shading and stippled greys, while the flowers use cleaner outlines and lighter fills against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bust had lain face down in the nettles behind the yard for three winters before Dom dragged it out with a sack truck. Its beard had gone green at the curls and a snail had made a home in one nostril. Nobody at the stonemason's knew whose head it was. Dom's gaffer reckoned a river god, because the carver had cut a groove along the brow for rain to run off, and old Mrs Akers from the flats above the arches swore it was Pan, come down off the hills when the blossom was out.

By the second Friday the crescent moon scratched above the brow showed clean, and the cherry tree over the wall had started dropping petals onto the cobbles. Dom set the head on the bench under the tree and forgot about it until one morning he came in to find the petals swept into a ring around its base, as neatly as Mrs Akers swept her step. The snail was back in the nostril, asleep. Dom asked the gaffer who had touched it. The gaffer said nobody, and went back to his tea.

That night Dom left the gate unlatched and a saucer of milk on the bench. In the morning the saucer was empty and the bust had turned to face the flats, where a light burned on the third floor for the first time in a month. Mrs Akers had stopped coming down for her milk after her husband died.

Dom carried the bust up four flights with the petals in his cap and knocked on her door. Nobody answered, so he set it on the mat with its face turned towards the frame and went back down the stairs.
