Bearded man portrait tattoo on a limb

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a bearded man with swept, wavy hair, drawn with fine shading that gives the skin, eyes and beard strong depth. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black and grey ink with soft gradients and high contrast. The face fills the frame, with a dark garment and red fabric behind the limb.

You find the head in the ninth week of clearing the chapel rubble at Hollin Keep, under a slab of fallen vault where rainwater has pooled for two hundred years. It is grey as wet slate, bearded to the collarbone, and its hair rolls back from the brow in carved waves, as if the sea had been frozen mid-break. The surveyor wants it logged and moved. You want to wipe the silt from its eyelids first.

The eyes are not carved the way you expected. Someone worked the pupils so they catch the light from the high window, and they sit a shade too close to the brow, as if the man beneath is squinting at something he dislikes. Old Mrs Pryce from the village says the lords of Hollin kept a stone likeness of their grandfather in the great hall, and that when the castle fell the family were made to carry it down the valley and drop it in the mere. Nobody believed her. Nobody believed you when you said the water had gone still around the spot where the crate was found.

That night you sleep in the gatehouse with the lamp lit. Around three a drip starts somewhere in the roof, steady as a clock, and you count it until you lose the count. In the morning the crate lid has been levered off by hand, and the head sits on the flagstones facing the door, with the silt wiped clean from one cheek in a long, deliberate stroke.

The surveyor writes 'damaged in transit' and signs the form. You do not correct him. You carry the lamp down to the chapel each evening now and sit with your back to the wall, and the old man goes on looking past you at the gate, waiting for whoever is coming up the road.
