Predator alien face tattoo
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A large, detailed portrait of the Predator creature's face fills the frame, with heavy brow ridges, glowing amber eyes, a wide open mouth and visible fangs. The skin texture and shading are rendered in fine gradients of brown, ochre and dark tones, with red highlights in the mouth and a dark band at the base. The colour is applied across the whole design and the image is cropped tightly around the tattoo.

Wednesday, 3 a.m. The galley smells of burnt porridge and diesel, and I've stopped pretending the cupboard door hasn't been swinging open since Monday. Pell says it's the swell. I know what I saw in the net drum: a long head with a crest like a wet lobster's back, two eyes the colour of stewed tea held over a candle, and a jaw that opened in sections, like a broken umbrella.

It came up in the trawl off the Faroes, tangled in the mesh with three cod and a lot of bad temper. The skipper wanted it over the side before the crew saw it properly. I took the bucket of mackerel scraps down to the hold instead and told the lads it was a seal. Under the strip light its plates have gone from bruise to ochre, and the fangs have grown a sheen, like they've been polished on purpose.
Last night it took a herring straight from the frying pan and sat on the bench watching me with the patience of a man who has all the time in the world. Then I understood it wasn't hungry. It was learning the ship: which hatch sticks, who sleeps by the winch, how many steps it takes to reach the wheelhouse. It has already counted us. I left a bowl of fish out and wrote in the log, Net clear, vessel secure.
This morning the bowl is empty and the cupboard is shut, and something under the bench is clicking softly, like a man counting his teeth. I've written to my sister in Aberdeen to say I'll be home for Christmas. I haven't told her the ship is heading the other way.
