Beast and rose with woman portrait on shoulders

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A back and shoulder view showing a horned beast figure with a rose on the upper arm, a woman's portrait with a rose on the right shoulder blade, and a line of cursive script across the upper back. The beast and portrait use shaded greys with fine detail in the hair, fur and roses, and a small figure sits between them on the arm. The composition is a casual indoor photo taken from behind.

The last rose on the estate had gone the colour of old pennies by Michaelmas, and still the beast would not let anyone cut it. Hester Vane carried the watering can up the north terrace every dusk anyway, because her mother had promised the steward the garden would stay alive until the wet spring, and a promise made in that house weighed more than the stones.

The beast met her at the glasshouse door as he always did, his horns scraping the lintel, his coat hanging in grey folds like wet slate. He never spoke of the sickness in the house. He only asked whether she had read the letters, and she said yes, though she had read only the one about the bread prices. On a bracket of cold iron behind him, the lamplighter Fenwick sat cross-legged, polishing the brass of a dead lantern with his sleeve and humming a tune with no end.

On the thirteenth night the frost came early, and the rose opened anyway, one pale petal at a time, as though it had been waiting for a witness. Hester knelt in the wet earth and understood at last what her mother had promised. It had never been the beast's life that needed keeping. It had been the rose's, and the rose had only ever needed someone to carry the can up the hill.

A single petal came loose and drifted down into her open palm. The beast's hand closed over her wrist, heavy and careful, and neither of them spoke until the lamp had burned down to nothing.
