Skull and scrollwork tattoos on thighs
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two thighs, with a large shaded skull on the right thigh wearing an ornate headdress and a smaller, more detailed design on the left thigh that includes a banner and scrollwork. The tattoos use fine linework and soft grey shading with strong contrast against the skin. The image is black and white, with the legs raised diagonally across the frame against a dark background.

The Morwenna came in on the Thursday ebb with her nets hanging off the gunwale like wet washing, and Ruan Pascoe stood on the quay shouting for someone to cut them free. Nobody moved. He had a dagger on his belt that he'd only ever used on bait, and he was sawing at a snarled warp with the blade turned up, swearing at the knot. I was the only netmender left in Porthkennack that season, so the job came to me by default.

The mesh was heavy with dogfish and one ray folded up like a funeral shroud. Under the brine stink I found a tobacco tin, a brass button, and a painted board nailed inside the wheelhouse door. It showed a bearded skull crowned with a headdress of feathers and beads, a banner curling beneath its jaw in faded red letters. Ruan said his father had carried that board on every boat he ever skippered, and it had never once come home empty. I told him the sea didn't care for luck, only for knots.
We worked until the lamps came on in the chandlers. He talked about his father's hands, how they never shook even in the worst blow off the Lizard, and how the boat was to be sold to a syndicate from Newlyn by Michaelmas. He said it the way you'd name the weather. I kept sewing. When the last mesh was closed, he lifted the board off its nail and turned it over. Scratched on the back in a careful hand was a list of tides, each one with a tick beside it, and the last tick had no date.
He hung the board back on the nail that night, and I went home with his dagger in my coat pocket by mistake. I still have it. Every spring I take it out and cut a fresh warp with it, and the skull is still grinning down from the net shed wall, watching the new stitches hold.
