Bee sketch over geometric circles
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A realistically shaded pencil drawing of a bee in side view, with soft hatched shading on its body and fine sketched wings. Beneath it, a faint grid of overlapping circles and hexagons sits above a single vertical stem line that runs down the page. The palette is entirely greyscale graphite on pale paper, and the composition is centred with generous empty space.

You are shouldering the yard gate against the sleet when you hear the hive ticking under its straw coat. Ada Pryce, who keeps the Drover's Rest at Kettleby Cross, says the bees have been restless since the lane closed. You came up the valley with wax and frames for a single night's delivery, and now it is the fourth day and the snow has buried the milestone at the crossroads.

Ada counts the cells by candlelight at the kitchen table, pencilling small rings in the margin of the ledger wherever the comb runs into the next. Hexagons fit together without a gap, she tells you, which is why bees never bother with squares. You think of the skep rim, the round of the hive lid, and how every circle you draw seems to want a neighbour. She keeps a jar of lime honey on the top shelf, labelled in her own hand with a year you can't quite read, and she won't let you open it until the thaw.
On the third night the cold finds the hive. In the morning there is one bee on the windowsill, legs stiff, wings hooked against its back. You carry it to the range in an upturned teacup and drip sugar water onto your fingertip. It takes an hour. Then it climbs the thin brass stem of the candlestick, pauses at the top as if taking a bearing, and lifts off into the grey light.
When the lane finally reopens, Ada hands you the jar and says the bee went out at dawn, following the fence wire down to the empty hive by the orchard. You look back from the gatepost and there it is again, a dark speck turning slow circles above the snow, waiting for you to leave so it can go home.
