Two bumblebees on a chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
Two bumblebees are tattooed on the upper chest, one above the other and angled slightly to the left. Their bodies are rendered in yellow and black with soft shading and highlights, and their translucent wings are drawn in pale grey with fine veining. The skin around them is pale and the edge of a dark top strap runs diagonally across the lower right of the frame.

The orchard wall at Haddon Cross had a gap in it the width of a cart, and every autumn the children of the village ran through it to steal windfalls from Mrs Pargeter's trees. Tom Ashby was the last to leave the school in the year the bees went quiet. He carried a jam jar with two bumblebees inside, which he had caught in the clover behind the chapel because the teacher said bumblebees could not fly, and he wanted to prove her wrong before the summer ended.

He let them go at the wall. They rose heavy and loud, bumping against the stone, and then they found the air and went over the top of the orchard like two coins thrown up and caught by the sun. Mrs Pargeter came out with her broom and shouted that bees were not for children, and Tom ran, and the bees went on ahead of him, always just above the hedge.
Thirty years later the reunion was held in the same hall, under the same tired bunting. Tom came in late with a cardboard box under his arm. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel, was the last of Mrs Pargeter's jam, sealed in a jar with a wax lid, and on the lid someone had written in careful capitals: FOR THE ONES WHO FLEW.
Nobody remembered the bees. Tom did, and he opened the window, and the hall filled with the smell of clover and the sound of wings against the glass.
