Mrs Okonedo's stall was the last one before the car park, under a green canvas that had given up keeping the water out somewhere around the second hour. Dora Platt had been sent to help with the honey because her own hands were too cold to count change. She stood behind the trestle with a tin of coins and watched the rain bounce off the cobbles in small white crowns.

The bee arrived at eleven, when the market was at its emptiest. It came in under the flap, wings soaked flat and slow, and settled on the rim of a jar of heather honey as if it had paid for a seat. Mrs Okonedo did not swat at it. She said her mother had called a lost bee a hired hand, sent to check the weather, and that you let it finish its errand before you turned it out.

Dora thought that was nonsense until the bee lifted, shook one wing, and walked the length of the trestle, stopping at each jar as though reading the labels. Nobody bought anything. A man in a yellow cagoule paused, looked at the bee, looked at the price, and went on towards the fish van.

When the rain finally thinned, the bee was gone, and Dora found a single smear of gold on the lid of the heather jar, the exact colour of the sun she had not seen all morning. Mrs Okonedo wiped it with her thumb, sold the jar to a boy with a bicycle, and said nothing about it at all.
