Believe in yourself script on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of the words Believe in yourself in black cursive script across the inner wrist, with Believe in on the upper line and yourself below. The lettering has smooth, even strokes with slightly heavier loops on the descenders, and the ink appears crisp against the skin. A braided tan bracelet with a silver clasp sits below the lettering, and a laptop keyboard fills the blurred background.

Don't you lean on that board, boy, the gold leaf is still tacky and Mrs Probert will have your hide. Pass me the rag. You want to know how the Sunnyside Hotel came to have the finest window in Caddle Bay? I'll tell you, but you'll hold the brush tin while I talk.

It was the spring of 1956, and Ivy Probert was the only signwriter for twelve miles. Mr Pryce from the hotel came in one wet Tuesday and asked for something to cheer the fishermen's wives as they walked past. He wanted a proper motto, he said, in good letters. Ivy took a week over it. She practised on slate at her kitchen table, the same two lines over and over, until the capital B stood up straight and the descenders on the y and the f dropped low and easy, like line let out off a reel. She said a good script has to breathe.

When she finally painted it, Mr Pryce looked at it for a long time and then said it was daft and asked her to change it to Ask the Vicar. Ivy only smiled and went on with her brush. Next morning the window was full of sunlight, and the words sat there in black, clean as a bell. Nobody changed a thing. By the end of the month the girls from the cannery were copying the lettering onto their own wrists with Ivy's spare ink pen, and she said that was the only sign she ever painted that walked out of the town with somebody.
